Shop perspective

A live edge dining table puts the wood front and center. That's part of the appeal. But an interesting slab doesn't automatically make a great table. The proportions, construction, finish, and surrounding room all matter.

Before falling in love with the biggest slab you can find, consider where it's going and how it'll be used. An irregular edge means the overall dimensions don't always tell the full story about usable space. The right table should accommodate the people around it as comfortably as it fits the room.

Choose the Wood for the Room, Not Just the Grain

Walnut, white oak, maple, and ash all bring different colors, grain patterns, and characteristics. Consider how the wood will look alongside the floors, chairs, and surrounding furniture, but also how it will hold up to everyday use.

And whatever the species, a slab needs to be properly dried and suitable for the job before it becomes a table.

Make the Whole Table Work Together

The shape of the top affects usable space. The placement of the base affects chair clearance and legroom. The construction needs to provide stability while allowing the solid wood to expand and contract with seasonal changes.

A great-looking slab and a great-looking base don't necessarily make a great table together. They need to work as one.

Finish for Meals, Work, and Real Life

Dining tables see spills, heat, homework, family dinners, and everything in between. Different finishes offer different tradeoffs in protection, appearance, feel, and repairability.

No finish makes wood indestructible. The goal is a table that can withstand years of use, not one that needs to be treated like a museum exhibit.

Make Custom Count

One of the advantages of a custom live edge table is being able to consider the slab, base, proportions, finish, and surrounding space together rather than choosing each independently.

Start with the room and how you want to use the table. Then find or build the combination that makes sense. A beautiful slab isn't much of a win if everyone sitting around it has to make accommodations for it.
