Shop perspective

A table carries more life than most furniture gets credit for. Meals, work calls, late-night conversations, homework, invoices, birthdays, and the occasional dropped plate all happen there. A custom table has to look right and be ready for all of it.

Still Am Studios builds tables from our Canton shop for homes, offices, restaurants, and studios. Live edge dining tables, clean modern designs, coffee tables, conference tables, and one-off pieces all start with understanding how the table will actually be used.

Live Edge Without Letting the Slab Do All the Talking

A live edge dining table can be beautiful, but an interesting slab isn't automatically a great table. Proportions, construction, the base, finish, chair clearance, and room scale all matter.

We approach live edge work as furniture, not just a piece of wood on legs. The natural edge should add character without making the table awkward to sit at, clean, or pair with the surrounding room.

Dining Tables, Coffee Tables, and Work Tables

Different tables ask different things of their design. Dining tables need comfortable seating, enough usable surface, and room for people to move around them. Coffee tables need to work with the surrounding furniture without getting in the way. Work tables have their own demands depending on what's actually happening on top of them.

Those differences influence the proportions, construction, materials, and details. There's no single table design that makes sense everywhere.

Get the Proportions Right

A table needs to fit both the room and the people using it.

Seating capacity, circulation space, chair dimensions, nearby furniture, and the table's overall proportions should all inform the design. A beautiful table can quickly become an annoyance if everyone has to squeeze past it or rearrange the room to pull out a chair.

We consider those practical requirements alongside the style, rather than treating one as an afterthought.

A Base Is More Than a Design Choice

The base contributes to the table's stability, appearance, seating clearance, and overall construction.

Trestle bases, pedestals, traditional four-leg designs, and metal bases each offer different advantages and limitations. The right choice depends on the top, the intended use, and the overall design.

And there's no rule that says every component needs to be made from the same material. Sometimes a metal base paired with a beautifully made wood top is exactly the right combination.

Wood Selection, Grain, and Movement

Solid wood moves. That's not a flaw. It's part of building with real material.

We account for seasonal movement, grain orientation, joinery, top thickness, and how the different components work together. A table should be designed and built to accommodate what the material will naturally do over time.

Wood species also influence the finished piece's color, character, weight, and durability. Walnut, white oak, cherry, maple, and other hardwoods offer different possibilities. The right choice depends on the design, the setting, and how the table will be used.

Finish Should Match the Life of the Table

A dining table that sees kids, holidays, spilled drinks, laptops, and daily meals needs a different finish conversation than a display table or occasional-use piece.

We consider appearance, feel, protection, maintenance, and repairability. Different finishes offer different tradeoffs, and none make a wood table indestructible.

Some people prefer a consistently pristine appearance. Others welcome the character that comes with years of use. Either way, we believe tables should be built to withstand their age, not hide it.

Custom Tables for Homes and Businesses

The same fundamentals apply whether we're building for a home, office, restaurant, or studio, but the demands change.

A family dining table needs to accommodate the routines of the household. A conference table needs to work for the people in the room and the people joining remotely. Seating arrangements, camera sightlines, power access, and how the space appears on a video call are all worth considering. Restaurant tables need to stand up to repeated use and cleaning. A coffee table might need storage, or simply the right proportions to complete a room.

The setting helps determine what we design and how we build it.

Built in Canton, Made for the Space It Belongs In

Still Am Studios designs and builds custom tables from our shop in Canton, Georgia, serving homeowners and businesses throughout North Georgia and the greater Atlanta area.

Unlike some larger built-in projects, freestanding furniture can also make sense for clients farther from the shop. For those projects, delivery logistics, access, and installation requirements are part of the early conversation.

Whether the table is going across town or farther afield, the objective is the same: build something that feels right in its intended space and holds up to the life happening around it.
