Shop perspective

Some shelves are there to hold things. Others are there to show them off. The best ones often do both.

A wall of bookshelves can become the defining feature of a room. A few floating shelves might be exactly what an otherwise empty wall needs. And sometimes, you really do just need somewhere to put the dishes.

Still Am Studios designs and builds custom shelving from our Canton shop, considering the room, the things that belong in it, and the overall look and feel we're trying to create. Proportion, materials, structure, and appearance all play a part in getting it right.

Design Around What Belongs There

A collection of books, a few pieces of pottery, and a pantry full of everyday supplies make different demands on shelving.

Weight and dimensions matter, but so does what you want to see, what you'd rather put away, and the role the shelves should play in the room.

Sometimes the collection becomes the visual centerpiece. Other times, the shelving itself is the statement. The design should account for both what belongs on the shelves and how the whole arrangement belongs in the space.

Floating Shelves Need the Right Support

Floating shelves get their clean appearance by concealing the hardware that holds them up. Making that work requires some planning.

Shelf length, depth, material, expected weight, and the structure of the wall all influence the attachment method. A long floating bookshelf needs a different approach from a short display ledge.

We consider the support system alongside the shelf's proportions and design, so the finished piece achieves the look we're after without compromising its ability to do the job.

Built-In Shelving Should Belong to the Room

Built-in bookshelves and cabinet walls offer an opportunity to make storage feel like part of the architecture.

The relationship to existing trim, windows, ceiling lines, and surrounding furniture all influences the design. So do the smaller construction details.

Scribing allows cabinetry to fit walls that aren't perfectly straight. Consistent reveals and carefully considered transitions help the finished work feel intentional rather than squeezed into an available opening.

Those details might not be the first things someone notices, but they contribute to how the whole room comes together.

Get the Proportions and Structure Right

Shelf thickness and span influence both appearance and performance. Long, thin shelves can look beautiful, but they still need enough support to carry their intended load without excessive sagging.

Depending on the design, that might mean adjusting the span, changing the construction, or incorporating additional support.

We work through those decisions as part of the overall design, rather than treating structural requirements and appearance as separate problems.

Shelving That Adapts to What You Own

A library wall, pantry, record collection, and retail display all have different storage needs.

Books and records can put substantial weight on shelving. Pantry storage benefits from easy access and flexibility. Display shelving might need to accommodate changing collections or merchandise.

Fixed shelves can contribute to the structure and composition of a built-in, while adjustable shelves offer more flexibility over time. The right arrangement depends on what the space needs today and how it might change.

Materials That Shape the Space

Wood species, grain, color, finish, and construction all influence the character of custom shelving.

A walnut bookcase can become a statement in its own right. Painted built-ins might blend naturally with the surrounding architecture. White oak floating shelves can introduce warmth and texture without overwhelming the room.

Solid hardwood, veneered panels, and other cabinet materials offer different possibilities for appearance, construction, durability, and cost.

We choose the combination that makes sense for the design and how the finished work will be used.

Made for the Room That's Actually There

New construction and older homes alike can present their own installation challenges. Walls aren't always straight, floors aren't always level, and existing trim or electrical outlets don't always land where we'd prefer.

Custom shelving allows us to account for those conditions rather than forcing a standard product into a space it wasn't designed for.

From our Canton shop, we design and build shelving for homes and businesses throughout North Georgia and metro Atlanta, with installation details considered as part of the project from the beginning.

From a Single Shelf to a Complete Wall

Sometimes the answer is a pair of floating shelves. Other times, it's a full wall of bookshelves, cabinetry, integrated lighting, or a larger built-in arrangement.

We're comfortable working at either scale.

Whether the goal is to organize a collection, create a beautiful focal point, or completely rethink a room, we bring design and craftsmanship together to make something that looks and feels like it belongs.
