Shop perspective

Mudrooms are honest rooms. They show how a family really comes home. Shoes, backpacks, coats, sports gear, dog leashes, bags, and the daily drop all tell the truth fast.

Still Am Studios designs and builds mudrooms around that reality. The best mudroom isn't the one that looks perfect empty. It's the one that still works when everyone comes through the door tired, late, and carrying too much.

But it's also part of coming home. The space should feel welcoming, look like it belongs to the rest of the house, and make everyday life a little easier.

We bring room planning and shop work together. The same thinking that informs the layout and overall design also guides how we build the cabinetry, select materials, and install the finished work.

Start With the Door the Family Actually Uses

The front door may welcome guests, but the garage or side door often carries daily life. We start with how people actually move through the space.

Where does the door swing? How do people get from the entry to the rest of the house? Where do groceries land, shoes come off, and backpacks get dropped?

A mudroom should work with those existing routines rather than expect everyone to develop new habits just to keep the room organized.

Benches, Hooks, Cubbies, and Closed Storage

A mudroom might call for a simple bench and hooks, a full cabinet wall, a built-in locker system, or a compact drop zone beside the door.

The details matter when they affect how the pieces work together. Hooks positioned above a bench need enough clearance for hanging coats. Cubbies should accommodate the bags and other things they'll actually hold. Shoe storage needs to account for different sizes and types of footwear.

And none of those elements should make it harder to move comfortably through the room.

Finding the Right Balance of Open and Closed Storage

Open storage makes frequently used things easy to reach. Cabinets and drawers can keep less attractive or occasional-use items out of sight.

How much of each makes sense depends on the household, available space, and how the room should look and feel. A wall of open hooks may work perfectly for one family, while another might prefer cabinetry that keeps most things behind closed doors.

There's no universal formula. The goal is to make the everyday things convenient without letting them take over the room.

Design Around People, Not Just Dimensions

Wall measurements are only part of the picture. Door and drawer clearances, walking space, outlets, trim, vents, and the reach of the people using the room all influence what makes sense.

For families with young children, accessible storage today might need to accommodate different needs a few years from now. Adjustable shelves, flexible compartments, or hooks that can be repositioned can help a mudroom adapt without rebuilding the entire thing.

Those considerations should inform the design alongside the materials, proportions, and appearance of the finished space.

Mudroom, Laundry Room, and Pantry Can Share One Plan

Sometimes the entryway also serves as a laundry room, pantry overflow, or utility space. When several functions share the same room, planning them together can make better use of the available space.

That might mean combining a laundry counter with nearby storage, incorporating a cabinet for household supplies, or making room for coats and bags without interrupting access to the washer and dryer.

The point isn't to cram more functions into the room. It's to make the ones already there work better together.

Built for the Life That Comes Through the Door

North Georgia has plenty of rain, red clay, and the usual mess that accompanies everyday life. Mudrooms need materials and finishes that can handle regular use, occasional moisture, and frequent cleaning.

Lower cabinetry, bench surfaces, shoe storage, and hardware deserve particular consideration because of how people interact with them.

But durability shouldn't come at the expense of the space itself. We want a mudroom that can handle the wear and tear of daily life while still feeling like a natural extension of the home, not an annex of the garage.

Custom Storage for Newer and Older Homes

Homes around Canton, Woodstock, Roswell, Milton, and metro Atlanta come in all shapes, ages, and layouts.

Some have generous entryways that could accommodate substantial cabinetry. Others have narrow passages or underused corners where a smaller built-in might make a meaningful difference.

Custom mudroom storage gives us the flexibility to work with the actual dimensions, architecture, and needs of the household rather than trying to fit a standard cabinet arrangement into every space.

From Daily Routine to Shop-Built Cabinetry

Our process starts with understanding what the space needs to accomplish. Photos, measurements, conversations, and site visits help us get a clear picture of the room and how it's used.

From there, we develop the layout and design, work through materials and construction details, and build the components in our Canton shop.

Because we're involved in both design and fabrication, we can consider the practical realities of construction throughout the process rather than discovering them after the design is finished.

Make Coming Home a Little Easier

A finished mudroom should make everyday routines easier while creating a space people actually enjoy walking into.

That means having a sensible place for the things that come and go, keeping the room comfortable to move through, and creating storage that fits naturally into the home.

The goal isn't a mudroom that always looks empty. It's one that can handle a busy family without always looking like it.
