Shop perspective

A fireplace is often a natural focal point in a room, and the mantel can have an enormous influence on how that whole space looks and feels.

Sometimes the right addition is a substantial reclaimed beam. Other times, it's a refined hardwood mantel with a particular profile, color, or finish. And sometimes, rethinking the mantel opens up an opportunity to do something entirely different with the surrounding wall.

Still Am Studios designs and builds custom wood fireplace mantels with the larger room in mind. We consider the creative direction, materials, proportions, construction, and installation together to make something that feels right for the space.

Design for the Whole Fireplace Wall

The mantel doesn't exist in isolation. Its proportions, material, and overall character need to make sense alongside the fireplace, surrounding architecture, and the rest of the room.

A wide stone fireplace might call for an entirely different treatment than a smaller firebox surrounded by painted millwork. Ceiling height, nearby windows, existing trim, and the furniture arrangement can all influence the design.

Sometimes the mantel should be the centerpiece. Other times, a more restrained approach allows the surrounding materials or architecture to take the lead.

Wood, Profiles, and Personality

White oak, walnut, pine, and other woods offer different possibilities in color, grain, texture, and character.

The design might call for a substantial beam with a natural appearance or a more refined profile with carefully shaped edges. A square edge, bevel, cove, or subtle shadow line can change the character of the finished piece.

Reclaimed wood brings another set of possibilities. Existing wear, checking, and variations in color can give a mantel character that would be difficult to reproduce in new material. Its condition and suitability for the installation also need to be considered.

The goal is to find the right combination of material, shape, and finish for the room, not simply choose whichever wood looks best in a photograph.

When the Mantel Is Part of a Bigger Plan

A custom mantel can stand beautifully on its own. But it can also be one part of a more complete fireplace wall.

Built-in bookshelves, lower cabinets, wood paneling, display space, and integrated lighting can all contribute to the same overall design.

When those elements are part of the vision, considering them together creates more opportunities for a cohesive result. Even if the project happens in stages, it's worth understanding where the room might be headed.

Fit, Fastening, and Fireplace Clearances

A wood mantel needs to be securely installed, and its design must account for the fireplace itself.

Because wood is combustible, clearance requirements are especially important. Those requirements vary depending on the fireplace or insert, manufacturer instructions, and applicable building codes.

The wall construction also influences how the mantel can be mounted and supported.

We consider those conditions as part of the design so the intended appearance and the practical requirements of installation work together.

When There's a TV Above the Fireplace

A fireplace wall often has more than one job, particularly when it also accommodates a television.

The mantel can contribute to the overall composition, but its position and dimensions also influence where the screen can be placed. Viewing comfort, heat exposure, wiring, and the surrounding cabinetry all deserve consideration.

And sometimes, the better answer is to place the television somewhere else.

We look at how the room is actually used rather than assuming every fireplace needs the same arrangement of mantel, screen, and built-ins.

Finish and the Character of the Room

A mantel's finish has a significant influence on its appearance, from the color and sheen to how much of the wood's natural character remains visible.

A natural-looking wood finish might emphasize grain and texture, while a stained or painted treatment could create an entirely different relationship with the surrounding brick, stone, or trim.

Maintenance, cleaning, and everyday use also matter. Finish selection should be appropriate for the installation, but no wood finish replaces the need for proper fireplace clearances.

We want the finished piece to look beautiful today and continue to feel right as the room and the wood age.
